Mooca

Heidi and I went to my friends Justin and Shay's apartment last night for dinner and met their fantastic cat Mooca.  She used to be named Fatty, but later had a name change because she looks a bit like a cow.  (And she really isn't fat, anyway.)  She is suuuuper friendly and cuddly and hung out with us the whole night.

Traveling Cat

I know, I know, it is a pretty terrible picture, but in the tan pet box is a black-and-white kitty that I saw on the 2 train yesterday afternoon.  It was so quiet that I was pretty convinced that the box was empty until I saw it poke its little nose through one of the holes!  I felt bad for it because its human chaperon didn't pay any attention to it the whole ride :-C

Happy 4th Birthday, City Kitties!

I've never celebrated City Kitties' anniversary before, but four years ago today I took the leap by deciding to  embarrass myself and expose my cat-lady tendencies to the world.

Cats spend 12.5 hours a day sleeping, so to recognize this momentous event I'll share a couple pictures of my two favorite City Kitties in their favorite sleeping spots.

Unfortunately, Doodle loves to sleep on my sweater shelf in my closet:
Maybe I should move the sweaters to a higher shelf that he can't reach...

And here is Scribble sleeping, as always, on a bag:
To my handful of dedicated readers, thank you!  I'm looking forward to delivering more kitties to your computer screen.

Moo Shoe Cat

Heidi sent me a picture of this cat who lives on the Lower East Side in a vegan shoe store, Moo Shoes. We had actually met him and his friend before, but it is always nice to have an update :-D

Atlantic Avenue Cat

I saw this cat hanging out on Atlantic Avenue only seconds after I left the store that Fille and Mish Mush live in (see previous post)!  It is hard to see, but s/he is sitting in a tree garden (you know, the part of the sidewalk that has no paver so a tree can grow there?).  What a nice surprise :-D

Fille and Mish Mush

I got dinner with my good friend Olga (who is a bit judgmental of my love of cats) on Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn this evening.  On our walk from dinner to Trader Joe's I wanted to go into one of the many Arabic food stores that line the street there.  This one, in particular, drew me in, not only because it smelled so good even from the sidewalk, but because it looked like it had been there a long time... and probably harbored cats.  Well, I was right.  I present to you Fille and Mish Mush (North African names, according to the store clerk's acquaintance):
I think they are brothers, since they are nearly identical in their facial features and general rotundness.  Here is a closeup of Mish Mush, whose stripes are a bit wider than his counterpart's, hanging out in his cardboard box:
And here is Fille, smelling my doggie bag:
The clerk said there is a third cat, but I did not have the pleasure of meeting him/her.  I guess I have an excuse to go back now.

Key Cats

Jen and Colette told me about these cute cat key covers that you can get at Kinokuniya, a Japanese bookstore on Sixth Avenue across from Bryant Park.  I happened to be in the neighborhood this afternoon and picked up two: one that looks just like Scribble (above) and one that looks like Doodle (below)!  Even the eye color is accurate :-D

Way-Upper West Side Cat

My very good friend Julia came to visit me today and we went for a long walk which took us up to the Columbia area.  On our way back down to the express train on Broadway we bumped into this 99 cent store cat who was hanging out on the sidewalk between 102nd and 103rd streets (right near where Jenny used to live!).  S/he was very friendly and greeted me with an assertive meow before s/he went back in her/his store.

City Kitties Travels: "Second City" Kitty

I was in Chicago this weekend for my very good friend Jenny's wedding.  Unfortunately, I saw no real kitties so I have to post the next best thing: a cute drawing that I saw in a sandwich shop window in Wicker Park.

(I actually saw a girl with an awesome kitty tattoo on the blue line, but I thought that would be creepy if I took a picture of her arm--though, to be fair, it would not have been the first time I took a creepy picture for this blog.)

Smart Cat

Heidi and I were walking through Chinatown this evening when she spotted this cute little orange cat.  I named him "Smart Cat" because he hangs next to an outdoor seafood market.  He probably gets so many delicious treats there :-D

Adoptapalooza

The City had a pet adoptapalooza today in Union Square.  My friend Heidi volunteers for a shelter that was there and sent me this picture of the PetCo mascot:

I went to check it out and saw soooo many cute kitties!

And doggies!

And bunnies!

As much as I loved the animals, I did not adopt anyone today... Two cats are enough for one person!

Sunday Morning Smörgåsbord

I had to get some cat food this morning, and on my way to the pet store I saw not one but THREE cats!  Unfortunately, when I got to the pet store it was closed (!?!), but I guess the walk wasn't a total loss.

The above two cats I saw first.  I think they are strays, but they are obviously very well taken care of because they were eating a smörgåsbord of their own consisting of several cans of cat food AND chicken breast.  I hardly ever get to eat meat.  Lucky cats.

This next cat I saw a block or two down the street from the first two.  He is definitely taking advantage of the beautiful day with a nap in the shade.

Spied-On Cat

I was just sitting on my futon and staring into space when I noticed this little black cat in the building across the way from mine.  And I creepily took it's photo.

Beth's Boston Cat

My good friend Heidi sent me a picture that her friend Beth took of a cat in Boston.  I am very excited to have more City Kitties contributors!

Relax Cat

I was walking to the bus on my way to work this morning when I saw this cat relaxing in a window.  I wish I could have relaxed in a window all day.  Jealous!
