Always Have an Emergency Plan

I woke up early this morning to the sound of emergency vehicles, which is not all that unusual in the city.  But then after hearing a few of them come up the street and abruptly stop nearby, I started to wonder what was going on.  So I got up and looked out my peephole and couldn't see anything.  Then I opened my door, which was apparently a bad idea because the reason I couldn't see anything was because there was a wall of thick smoke in the hallway--and all that smoke came pouring into my apartment!  Panic, of course, set in, and I started frantically trying to get my shit together so I could get myself, and hopefully my cats, outside.

Luckily, everything seems to be okay now.  The firemen told me I could stay in my apartment as long as I stayed near a window since the smoke, as you can see, has not completely cleared from the hallway:

Fires have always been my worst fear, so it is kind of strange that I don't have a plan for getting myself and my kitties out in case of emergencies like this.  (Though Scribble and Doodle did NOT want to cooperate this morning.)  I think backpacks make the most sense, so I think I am going to have to buy a second backpack (since I'm sure Scribble does not want to share such close quarters with Doodle) and put each of the cat's leashes in them.

Needless to say, this is not the way I was hoping to start my week but I am glad that my apartment is okay!!

Adee Cat

I went to the Bronx today to visit Gun Hill Brewery, and I saw this cat on Adee Ave. as I was walking to the 5 train.  It seemed interested in me and was meowing until a robin landed in its yard, and it promptly turned its attention to hunting.

Lil Grey Cat

I saw this lil grey cat when I was walking home from the bus tonight.  At first it stayed safely behind the hurricane fencing, but each time I went to leave it would walk closer to me until it ducked under the fence.  Kitty was still well within the driveway, though, so I didn't want to get too close.

San Antonio Gallery Cats

Heidi was on a Tour de Tejas this week and saw these two kitties, Tabitha (calico) and Cutie (was that his name, or just a description? Grey), in a gallery in La Villita, San Antonio. Fuzzy!!

City Kitties Travels: Luna

I was in Chicago this weekend to visit my friend Jenny, and we went to one of her friend's apartments for an Easter candy party. That's where I met Luna! She is suuuuuper cute, and reminded me of a round version of Scribble.

I also saw a couple of window cats in Chicago, and even one going through security at O'Hare as I was leaving, but failed to get any good pictures. So I'm glad to have a really nice picture of Luna and the Easter jelly beans :)

Yard Cat

This lil black kitty was chillin' in in a yard in Midwood yesterday afternoon :-D

Oakley

Very few dogs make the cut to be included in City Kitties, and Oakley is definitely one of them. I met Oakley at a pet store in Park Slope today and she is suuuuuuuuuuper cute, happy, and friendly. She waddled up to me as soon as I came in the store, and after a while of petting she wanted to play ball. So we tossed her ball around for a couple of minutes. It was hard to leave her--almost makes me want to get a dog. But that's not happening any time soon.

Trash Cat

Somewhere in this picture is a black cat that I saw next to the 9th Ave. station when I was on the D train today.

Window Watcher

I saw this fluffy black cat in a window when I was on my way to the gym this weekend.

City Bunnies

I saw two rabbits on leashes in McCarren Park yesterday!!!  (How very Williamsburg...)  Their names were Fugu (the black one) and Henry (the brown one).

Samson

Heidi sent me this cat art that her friend Marissa saw in a bar the other day.

Wildcat

I saw this kitty on my block today, and I thought it looked like a wild cat. So I googled "wild cat" just now and the Wikipedia article for the wildcat came up. As it turns out, there is a wild cat called a wildcat that looks just like the cat I saw today!

Here is a picture of a wildcat:

City Parrots!

I've heard about the parrots and parakeets that live in Brooklyn for a long time, but have never seen them. Well, imagine my surprise when I was walking down Greenwood Ave. in Midwood today when I saw this giant nest. I stopped to look at it and noticed a bright green parrot building it! And then I saw two of his bright green friends on a nearby branch. The next tree also had parrots in it. So if you see a big nest in a tree like this, look for parrots. They might be there.

P.S. Sorry the nest is backlit. Can't see the birdies :-C

The Freshmen Fifteen

I saw these two kitties (one grey, one black) at Brooklyn College today. They are kind of tubby, so I found it appropriate to call them the Freshmen Fifteen because they were on a college campus. (Although, Brooklyn College barely has student housing, so I'm not sure freshmen really gain weight there.)

The picture is super shitty because I was very worried about my past/current/future students seeing me taking pictures of cats.
