Etti-Cat

I was at one of my favorite museums, the New York City Transit Museum, this weekend with my brother Dave and his girlfriend Nina.  One of the best parts of the museum are the old subway cars lining the platform of the decommissioned station.  You can go inside them and see some of the old advertisements from each era.  In the 1960s, the MTA had an advertising campaign featuring Etti-Cat, the mass transit etiquette cat.  Here are a couple ads I saw.

And I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw a real cat down on the museum's platform!  Here is Etti-Cat in the flesh and blood, hanging out on one of the subway cars (a trash car?).  He has a collar, so I assume he is the museum's pet--his job is probably to keep the rodent population under control, since the museum is in a former station in the subway system.
Note (2/9/13): I just learned that the live Etti-Cat is named Sadie!  That is the name of my first dog :-D

Barcade Graffiti

My brother Dave and his girlfriend Nina came to visit me this weekend, and we went to Barcade in Brooklyn (I'd include a link, but my brother's computer got a nasty trojan from their website...).  Here is a cute graffiti cat from their bathroom.

Bayard Pets

I saw not one, but TWO cats in Chinatown today!

The first, above, I saw this morning when I was walking from the Grand Street stop on my way to work.  It was hanging out on Bayard Street and, apparently, lives in a restaurant because it walked inside and a worker asked me if I wanted to eat there... Not sure how I feel about eating at a restaurant that has a resident cat--although I'm sure I eat far more than my fair share of cat fur living with two anyway.

The next cat I saw this evening also on Bayard Street.  My boyfriend and I had just eaten some delicious soup dumplings at Joe's Shanghai when I saw this kitty in a medicinal herb shop.

Baker

This afternoon I was on the phone with Heidi and we were talking about how we had each seen kitty cats out last night (I saw two walking home from the bus), but neither of us could get a good picture in the dark.  Thankfully, in the middle of that conversation I saw Baker (whose name I will explain).  I had to hang up immediately to get a picture.

I named this cat Baker because the cat was warming itself in the sun.  The cat must have been baking, though, because today was hot AND the kitty has black fur.

Peeped-on Tom II

I know it is creepy to take pictures of what is on the other side of your neighbors' windows but, for the record, both times I've done this I have only taken a picture of a cat AND I was NOT the person to spot it.  This one, who was happily sunbathing in some sort of pet bed, my mom saw when she and my dad were visiting for the weekend.

** And as a side note, I feel as though I have been inundated with cats since Saturday.  I was just walking home from the subway when I saw a woman carrying her cat in her arms on my block.  Thankfully, I suppressed the urge to ask her for a picture because she probably would have maced me.

Adopt-a-Kitty Kitties

My boyfriend and I were kicking around Park Slope this weekend enjoying the beautiful weather when we saw these kittens on the sidewalk waiting to be adopted.  (Adult cats were there, too--you can see one behind the name tag below.  And as a side note, I am a huge proponent of adopting adult cats, because kittens get scooped up a lot more quickly by adopters.)
I don't remember their names, but they are so darn cute!  I'm sure all of them found a home.

79th Street Window Cats

I was walking from my gym to pick up laundry today when I happened to see these two cats on the very same block! I know these pictures are pretty craptastic, but I swear there are cats in them!

The first one was a black and white kitty:

And the second one was a pretty, fluffy calico:

It makes me wish I could just hang out in a window, staring out onto the world all day.

Fuzzy Cat

My good friend Heidi sent me this fuzzy picture of a little cat that she saw in Woodside, Queens this weekend!

Kittycat Beverage

I saw this sticker at the corner of West Street and Murray Street earlier today... I can't decide if it is being rude or cute. It reminds me of Spolem in Ridgewood, whose "alternate" name appears on this sticker.

Cheer Up Cat's Friend

Bastet, the Goddess of Cats, must know that I've been in need of a bit of a distraction in the past 24 hours. That must be why, when I was walking up 18th Ave. to my laundromat, she summoned Cheer Up Cat again, along with his friend, above, who was eating food out of a Friskies can.

I'm glad someone's taking care of them--they might be that breed that is rare in New York City: the outdoor cat pet.

Cheer Up Cat

Sometimes when life is crappy, the crappiness can be briefly interrupted by a nice little cat like the one I saw on 18th Ave on my way home this evening.

Happy 6th Birthday, Scribble!

Today Scribble turns 6!  It is so hard for me to believe; I remember when she was just a tiny kitten.  We celebrated this morning with a lovely tuna breakfast.  Scrib tends to really take her time when she eats, but she gobbled it all up!

She also spent the eve of her birthday relaxing in the bedbowl:
